Gavin Newsom’s Director of Public Health has abruptly resigned. Dr. Sonia Angell announced her departure late Sunday night.
The Governor himself had not been seen in the week since his office revealed a major “glitch” in the state’s COVID case data that has undermined public health measures and reopening.
He also refused to answer questions from the Associated Press as to why he suddenly stopped his frequent press conferences after the disastrous error was exposed.
When he did make a public appearance today, it was the worst display of obfuscation and accountability dodging I’ve ever seen.
For instance, he flatly refused to say whether the Public Health Director resigned at his request. Several reporters called Newsom on it, saying the public has a right to know. But he still refused to give answers.
The Governor’s Office is now promising a “full investigation.” Nice try. A self-investigation will not do. We need real answers as to how our government so momentously failed 40 million Californians.
The AP asked for my response:
“Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, a Republican from Rocklin, called the backlog ‘disastrous’ in a state of 40 million with ‘people’s livelihoods hanging in the balance. It’s just absolutely unacceptable.’
I added that such errors might have been caught if the Legislature had engaged in oversight rather than recess for 12 weeks.
