Congratulations to Gavin Newsom and the Legislature on shutting down Uber and Lyft. I know Californians can’t wait to start riding taxis again.

The companies announced they must stop operating here at midnight Thursday because of a law special interests instructed Gov. Newsom to sign last year.

They would be shut down right now if not for a last-minute emergency stay from a judge. But that’s only a temporary reprieve.

Tough luck to their 100,000 drivers, Gov. Newsom is saying. Tough luck to the millions of people who rely on their services.

By banning independent work, Assembly Bill 5 not only shut down Uber and Lyft, but destroyed livelihoods in hundreds of professions.

It’s been called the “most malicious and harmful law ever passed in California,” and next week I’m initiating a vote in the Assembly to repeal it.

Before the vote, I am personally presenting Gov. Newsom and each Legislator with a list of thousands of Californians who oppose the law.
