Yesterday, I rose on the Assembly Floor to express my support for our Ukrainian community. As usual, I was forced under threat of physical removal to wear a mask.
This was a last straw. Calling out the Legislature’s leaders, I asked if they thought Nancy Pelosi behaved recklessly by attending the State of the Union unmasked.
That got their attention. A few hours later, a memo went out formally rescinding the mask requirement at the State Capitol. So now, it’s just the kids who must suffer.
This minor victory came as we’ve arrived at a notorious day. On March 4, 2020, Newsom declared the State of Emergency. Looking back, the events that followed were surreal.
Like many Californians, I was barred from work as the Legislature recessed. When we finally returned on May 4, 2020, I gave an address insisting one-man rule must end.
When Newsom continued to rule by decree, on May 21, 2020, I introduced ACR 196 to terminate the State of Emergency and cut off his emergency powers.
When the Legislature refused to pass it, on June 8, 2020 James Gallagher and walked into State Superior Court and sued Gavin Newsom for abusing his emergency powers. We won a preliminary Injunction in June and won a trial against him in October.
When a stacked appeals court clogged up the lawsuit, I authored the Healthy Communities Resolution, which rejected lockdowns and offered a blueprint for local communities to chart their own course. Over a dozen counties passed it.
We fought Newsom in every way we could, channeling every outrage into a historic citizens movement. That movement came breathtakingly close to toppling the Governor. After the Recall, it’s only kept growing: just ask 3 newly unemployed SF school board members.
I’m hopeful we will finally end the emergency this month. But in a larger sense, we already have. We the People have taken matters into our how hands, and we’re about to reclaim our state and country.
Wish Newsom’s State of Emergency Happy Birthday by supporting his “chief antagonist”
