I just returned from a vote at the U.S. Capitol and am on my way back to California. I wanted to share with you some good news. We’ve surpassed 500,000 signatures for the Initiative to End Prop. 47.
You can get a petition to sign at End47.com. We now have a very good chance to qualify it for November’s ballot, but it’s crucial we keep up the pace gathering signatures for the final six weeks before the deadline.
Every day provides a new reminder of why this initiative is so important. This week, the flagship Macy’s in San Francisco became the latest major store to close.
Today, I wrote an op-ed for Fox News with District Attorney Vern Pierson. Here is an excerpt:
Prop. 47 took a hatchet to the state criminal code. It reclassified a number of offenses from felonies to misdemeanors, including shoplifting and related theft offenses, along with the use of drugs like methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl. The result, over the last decade, has been chaos in California’s streets – with soaring homelessness, rampant theft, and an overdose epidemic.
Before being elected to Congress, I was a member of the California Legislature. I tried to put a Prop. 47 Repeal directly on the ballot, but the Public Safety Committee refused (watch the video here). That’s why we’ve now taken matters into our own hands with a Citizen Initiative.
Since arriving in the U.S. Congress a year ago, I joined the House Subcommittee on Crime and sponsored two bills to crack down on organized retail theft. I’ve also tried to sound a warning about California’s destructive policies.
At a recent hearing, I outlined the three features of the decriminalization agenda causing a breakdown of law and order in California: reckless laws like Prop. 47, defunding of police, and rogue prosecutors. You can watch the video here.
Ending Prop. 47 is the most important step towards reversing this downward spiral. And we are getting closer to making it happen.
