Our trial against Governor Newsom has just concluded, and the Judge said she will issue a ruling “in very short order.” That probably means by the end of the week.
You can watch my opening statement here.
My observations of the different people involved in the trial:
James Gallagher: His performance was superb. He demolished the Governor’s defense in his presentation of the facts, and his explanation of the case’s importance was eloquent. I couldn’t ask for a better co-counsel, and the people of the 3rd Assembly District couldn’t ask for a finer legislator.
Governor Newsom’s Attorneys: They seemed friendly enough given the circumstances, but they faced an impossible task defending Gavin Newsom. If anything, their arguments made it even clearer that the Governor thinks he has unlimited power for the indefinite future.
The Judge: She said several times she thinks the case is important and made some statements that seemed favorable to our side. Though she made clear she had not decided how she was going to rule and would be reviewing the entire case file before doing so.
The Sutter County Court: The Court deserves great credit for taking the step of livestreaming the trial on Facebook due to “the extraordinary public interest in the proceeding.”
The People of California: Many hundreds showed up at the courthouse and many thousands more watched online. Seeing so many people who are fighting for our state has been tremendously inspiring.
I will let you know as soon as we have a ruling.
