Congratulations to Gavin Newsom and the Legislature on shutting down Uber and Lyft. I know Californians can’t wait to start riding taxis again.
The companies announced they must stop operating here at midnight yesterday because of a law special interests instructed Gov. Newsom to sign last year.
They would be shut down right now if not for a last-minute emergency stay from a judge. But that’s only a temporary reprieve.
Tough luck to their 100,000 drivers, Gov. Newsom is saying. Tough luck to the millions of people who rely on their services.
By banning independent work, Assembly Bill 5 not only shut down Uber and Lyft, but destroyed livelihoods in hundreds of professions. If you’re having a hard time hiring a tutor to assist with distance learning, you have California politicians to thank.
It’s been called the “most malicious and harmful law ever passed in California,” and next week I’m initiating a vote in the Assembly to repeal it. But ultimately, we need a personnel change at the Capitol.
Today, live on my Facebook page at 11 AM, I’ll be hosting a discussion with three leading candidates to remove from office legislators who attacked the people of California by voting for this bill.
