Crime in California is out of hand. FBI data shows violent crime has increased by double digits, and an epidemic of retail theft and open drug use are causing the collapse of our major cities.
Yet this year, there is a path back to sanity:
- First, voters can undo Prop. 47. Our chances of qualifying the initiative for the ballot are improving every day, but it’s vital we keep up the pace for the final month of signature-gathering. (Please share End47.com with anyone who’d like to sign!)
- Second, three rogue District Attorneys who refuse to enforce the law could be gone. San Francisco’s “progressive prosecutor” DA has already been recalled, Alameda’s will likely face a recall soon, and George Gascón can be ousted by LA voters in November.
- Third, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that may overturn the infamous Boise decision, which has greatly worsened homelessness and crime. I’ve filed an Amicus Brief urging the Court to allow California cities to enforce camping bans.
- Fourth, more jurisdictions, including San Francisco, are following the model we set in Placer County and charging fentanyl dealers with murder. (Watch my speech on the House Floor about the first ever murder conviction for dealing fentanyl.)
This pathway to sanity takes on the key elements of California’s descent: (1) reckless laws from a sweeping decriminalization agenda, (2) de-funding of police and attacks on law enforcement; (3) “progressive prosecutors” inviting anarchy through non-enforcement.
This year is our chance to swing the pendulum back towards public safety. It’s time to make crime illegal again in California.
