Gavin Newsom just directly addressed my proposal to suspend the gas tax. His answer: No. He'd prefer Californians keep paying the highest taxes while driving over the deepest potholes. Fortunately, as I outline in a NY Post op-ed, my Gas Tax Reduction Act will override Newsom.
This comes as new reports show Californians are paying twice as much for electricity and 40 percent more for gas than the rest of the country. As I noted on CNN: The way to make life more affordable in America is to learn from California's failures – that is, to repudiate Newsom.
At last week’s Governor’s race debate, the candidates did just that. All of them, regardless of party, tried to claim the mantle of “change.” As I discussed after the debate on NewsNation, even those claiming to support him know voters are desperate to turn the page on Newsom.
An even harsher repudiation just came from a report titled “California’s Economic Performance Review 2025.” In a House Floor Speech, I set out the most alarming findings: for instance, California has lost 433,00 private sector jobs with the only new jobs being in government.
And one more repudiation for Newsom: the State Supreme Court just agreed in a unanimous opinion with what we’ve been saying for a long time: the CA Coastal Commission is abusing its power. My Coastal Commission Accountability Act will further rein in this runaway agency.
Meanwhile, in DC: I helped passed a bill to allow better forest management in California, and I renewed my bill to outlaw mid-decade gerrymandering. I’m also chairing a hearing tomorrow on low education standards dragging down students in many California districts.
Finally, I discussed on Newsmax how California is the only state that offered "full scope" Medicaid regardless of immigration status. Costs grew to $10 billion in one year, enrolling 1.7 million people. Fortunately, in another repudiation, we forced Newsom to end the program.
