The last couple weeks have been among the most extraordinary in the history of our country. Yet through it all, we remain on track towards our goal: a path back to sanity in California.
First, an update from DC. Yesterday, I called for the resignation of Secret Service Director Cheatle after one of the most shocking, tragic, nearly catastrophic failures in U.S. history. Today, she did resign from her post. Tomorrow, I am questioning FBI Director Christopher Wray.
As to End 47 (now Prop. 36), the failed schemes to stop our initiative were so outrageous I took to the House Floor to record exactly what was thrown at us. The Daily Wire’s headline: “One of the Most Corrupt Schemes in the History of Our State: GOP Congressman Blisters Newsom.”
Meanwhile, our coalition continues to grow. I just met with Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper, a Democrat who endorses the initiative. And In-N-Out just provided major support; in January, it had to close a restaurant for the first time because of out-of-control crime.
The initiative is also getting newfound attention following the elevation of Kamala Harris. She was California Attorney General when the Prop. 47 disaster began, and was District Attorney of San Francisco when that city’s crime problems began to spiral out of control.
As Attorney General, Harris also paved the way for California to become a Sanctuary State, which has contributed to our state’s problems with crime and illegal immigration. To end the Sanctuary State, I’ve introduced a bill in Congress called the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act.
And thanks to our victory at the Supreme Court on homelessness, San Francisco is undertaking “very aggressive sweeps” of homeless encampments. Between this and our End 47 initiative, that beautiful city – and the rest of our state – have new hope for the future.
